CUSTOMS AGENT: YOU CAN'T MAKE THIS STUFF UP!
by Retired Special Agent Kevin Power
This story takes place in the mid-1980’s, when the author was a 25-year-old newly-hired Criminal Investigator/Special Agent in Key Largo, Florida, lured in by the excitement of the “War on Drugs.” He would soon find himself on the front lines of that war, usually taking place at night on sleek go-fast boats off the Florida Keys, or sneaking around in the thick mangrove jungles chasing smugglers. When he arrived at the small office, the former boss was a wanted fugitive, having flipped to the dark side smuggling his own lucrative loads.
Power, and the other young agents would have to learn quickly to try to stop the flow of tons of drugs into our country. Brazen smugglers were running huge loads of cocaine or marijuana using their own powerful offshore racing boats under the cover of darkness. Other clever smugglers were hiding their illicit cargo almost in plain sight, hidden inside elaborate secret compartments. This game of cat and mouse was played out almost every day and night, sometimes with deadly results.

CUSTOMS AGENT: BIG CASES, BIG PROBLEMS
by Retired Special Agent Kevin Power
After starting on cigarette boats with U.S. Customs in Key Largo, the author transferred to the Tampa office for a change of scenery. As he arrived he found a manhunt underway for a serial rapist/murderer who had killed a vacationing mother and her two teenage daughters. Billboards across the Bay Area asked for help in identifying the killer. Little did he know that soon enough he would be face to face with the killer himself, but not how you’d probably think.
Power, and the other young agents would learn first-hand the old agent expression that “Big cases” came with matching “Big problems.” They would investigate body carriers who swallowed heroin pellets to smuggle the drug into the country from Nigeria. After flying across the country with heroin that had entered the U.S. inside the south end of a northbound Nigerian man, the agents would target an active NFL football player who was at the center of this conspiracy. Soon he would find himself in Federal Court going head-to-head with a “dream team” of high-priced attorneys representing an active NFL Player wrapped up in the heroin conspiracy.
The agents would also foil several innovative smuggling ventures involving a cruise ship traveling into the country. The author had more than his fair share of “Big Problems,” as you will see here.
The author makes you feel like you’re right there with him as these cases unfold, sometimes in the bad guy’s head, often with shocking results. This book also chronicles three contentious criminal trials with countless twists and turns. Like the title of his first book suggests, You Can’t Make This Stuff Up!

CUSTOMS AGENT: WHAT COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG?
by Retired Special Agent Kevin Power
Shortly after arriving at the Tampa office, the author volunteered to join the office’s Warrant Entry and Tactical Team to conduct high-risk enforcement operations across the state. They would be used to serve warrants on dangerous subjects, often using ingenious ways to gain the upper hand on the bad guys, including several “Trojan horse” operations. The team would evolve into a premier tactical team with a reputation for creative thinking, aggression, and excellence.
The Tampa office was always heavily involved in undercover investigations and storefront operations. The author became heavily involved in an aggressive new venture called Operation Ybor, where agents posed as drug smugglers to seize narcotics and dismantle criminal organizations. Authorized to use the drug proceeds to fund their own operations, they raised the bar, utilizing sophisticated storefronts using state-of-the-art surveillance technology.
With these high stakes, the author always reminded his teammates not to get too cocky by ending every elaborate briefing with, “What Could Possibly Go Wrong?”

CUSTOMS AGENT: DESERT ICE
by Retired Special Agent Kevin Power
When 9/11 happened, the author was heavily involved coordinating another undercover operation but was yanked out and assigned to U.S. Central Command’s Joint Interagency Coordination Group at MacDill AFB. As Operation Enduring Freedom began, the Customs Service, the oldest Federal Law Enforcement agency would become the youngest as the Department of Homeland Security was formed, combining parts of the Customs Service with INS, Border Patrol, and other agencies. The author and fourteen other Special Agents deployed to Iraq as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom, the regime change in Iraq. These agents, Codenamed Desert ICE, became the first US Federal Agents in Baghdad, conducting numerous investigations, including the looting of the Baghdad national museum, the Oil-for-Food program, the Iraqi Deck of Cards, Strategic Weapons Investigations, and the search for WMD.
Later, the Tampa tactical team would find itself deployed to New Orleans in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. Looking like a war zone here as well, the agents would participate in rescues, recoveries, and other law enforcement support missions.

CUSTOMS AGENT: CHILD PREDATORS
by Retired Special Agent Kevin Power
During his career, the author volunteered to be trained in Computer Forensics Investigations, analyzing data to prosecute subjects. The Customs Service has long been involved trying to prevent the distribution of child pornography from when photographs and videotapes were mailed across our nation’s borders. Now with the proliferation of electronic pornography over the Internet, Agents must change tactics to prevent child exploitation.
The author would be involved in numerous in-depth cases involving child victimization and exploitation with twists and turns that defy belief. Just when the agents would think they had seen it all, the next case would come along to shock them. Follow the author and other agents fighting to protect the innocence of children around the world.
Nearing retirement, the author became involved in a new program to train and mentor wounded military personnel to investigate child predators, known as the H.E.R.O. Program. Follow along with these Wounded Warriors as they battle Cyber-Perverts in several unbelievable cases.
