+ ShippingThis story takes place in the mid-1980’s, when the author was a 25-year-old newly-hired Criminal Investigator/Special Agent in Key Largo, Florida, lured in by the excitement of the “War on Drugs.” He would soon find himself on the front lines of that war, usually taking place at night on sleek go-fast boats off the Florida Keys, or sneaking around in the thick mangrove jungles chasing smugglers. When he arrived at the small office, the former boss was a wanted fugitive, having flipped to the dark side smuggling his own lucrative loads.
Power, and the other young agents would have to learn quickly to try to stop the flow of tons of drugs into our country. Brazen smugglers were running huge loads of cocaine or marijuana using their own powerful offshore racing boats under the cover of darkness. Other clever smugglers were hiding their illicit cargo almost in plain sight, hidden inside elaborate secret compartments. This game of cat and mouse was played out almost every day and night, sometimes with deadly results.

“An action packed book that describes the true way law enforcement happens. Not the glory stuff you see on TV. Well done.”
“Well written story of what really happens in law enforcement investigations from the mind numbing boredom to the adrenaline infused chaos of a high speed ocean chase. Doesn’t always have a happy ending but that is real life.”
“This Book…😀 I love true stories and this book is full of them ! These Customs Agents were some incredibly brave men and I highly recommend reading this . The books chapters will take you in depth of how the war on drugs truly was, and is. Excellent read.”

I loved the book. It tells the true story of one of many facets of the War on Drugs. The book tells the story of what it was like as a relatively new U.S. Customs Agent in South Florida during the mid 80’s. The book is filled with true stories depicting actual criminal cases and smuggling operations in South Florida and the Florida Keys. To the Special Agents in South Florida who heard of the term “Coconuts” it will give you a new perspective. My hat goes off to those “Coconuts”.

This is a must read if you are interested in the 1980s Drug War and maritime drug smuggling cases in the Florida Keys and Bahamas. The author brings you both the good guy’s and bad guy’s perspective on events in an easy to read format. I can’t wait to read his next books.

The book is an excellent introduction and description of the work the US Customs Service during the days of the “Cocaine Cowboys”. The book isn’t written with a ton of “cop language” so it’s easy to understand, but still gives the reader a great picture of the work the agents and investigators did. The style of storytelling enables the reader to visualize everything going on. A great read.
